This piece relies on our strict 60/40 ratio. The head commands the visual weight, supported by a stout, rounded torso. The large, sweeping felt eyes sit low on the face, specifically spanning Rounds 13 through 17. By angling them outward, we create an open, endearing expression. Precision in your stitch count is non-negotiable here; the geometry must be flawless.

The Pattern
The Head
We begin at the crown, working downward in continuous rounds using Black yarn.
➡️ Round 1: 6 sc in a MR (6)
➡️ Round 2: 6 inc (12)
➡️ Round 3: [1 sc, 1 inc] x 6 (18)
➡️ Round 4: [2 sc, 1 inc] x 6 (24)
➡️ Round 5: [3 sc, 1 inc] x 6 (30)
➡️ Round 6: [4 sc, 1 inc] x 6 (36)
➡️ Round 7: [5 sc, 1 inc] x 6 (42)

➡️ Round 15: [5 sc, 1 dec] x 6 (36)
➡️ Round 16: [4 sc, 1 dec] x 6 (30)
➡️ Round 17: [3 sc, 1 dec] x 6 (24)
Stuff the head firmly now, ensuring a perfectly spherical shape.
➡️ Round 18: [2 sc, 1 dec] x 6 (18)
➡️ Round 19: [1 sc, 1 dec] x 6 (12)
Fasten off. Leave a short tail and weave it inward.
The Oversized Hood
Worked in Red yarn. This piece must comfortably envelope the 42-stitch head.
➡️ Round 1: 6 sc in a MR (6)
➡️ Round 2: 6 inc (12)
➡️ Round 3: [1 sc, 1 inc] x 6 (18)
➡️ Round 4: [2 sc, 1 inc] x 6 (24)
➡️ Round 5: [3 sc, 1 inc] x 6 (30)
➡️ Round 6: [4 sc, 1 inc] x 6 (36)
➡️ Round 7: [5 sc, 1 inc] x 6 (42)
➡️ Round 8: [6 sc, 1 inc] x 6 (48)
➡️ Rounds 9-16: 1 sc in each st around (48)
Fasten off and weave in the ends. This piece remains detached for assembly.
The Legs (Make 2)
Start with Red yarn for the boots.
➡️ Round 1: 6 sc in a MR (6)
➡️ Round 2: 6 inc (12)
➡️ Round 3: [1 sc, 1 inc] x 6 (18)
➡️ Round 4: 1 sc in each st around (18)
Change to Black yarn cleanly on the last pull-through of Round 4.
➡️ Rounds 5-7: 1 sc in each st around (18)
For the first leg, fasten off and cut the yarn. For the second leg, do NOT cut the yarn. We move directly to the torso.
The Body
Continuing from the second leg with Black yarn.
➡️ Round 8: Chain 2. Insert your hook into any stitch on the first leg and make 1 sc. Place your stitch marker here. Make 17 more sc around the first leg. Place 2 sc along the chain. Make 18 sc around the second leg. Place 2 sc along the opposite side of the chain. (40)
➡️ Rounds 9-12: 1 sc in each st around (40)
➡️ Round 13: [8 sc, 1 dec] x 4 (36)
➡️ Round 14: 1 sc in each st around (36)
➡️ Round 15: [4 sc, 1 dec] x 6 (30)

Stuff the legs and lower torso firmly.
➡️ Round 17: [3 sc, 1 dec] x 6 (24)
➡️ Round 18: 1 sc in each st around (24)
➡️ Round 19: [2 sc, 1 dec] x 6 (18)
➡️ Round 20: [1 sc, 1 dec] x 6 (12)
Fasten off, leaving a very long tail for sewing. Stuff the remainder of the torso tightly.
The Arms (Make 2)
Begin with Red yarn for the gloves.
➡️ Round 1: 6 sc in a MR (6)
➡️ Round 2: [1 sc, 1 inc] x 3 (9)
➡️ Round 3: 1 sc in each st around (9)
Change to Black yarn cleanly.
➡️ Rounds 4-9: 1 sc in each st around (9)
Lightly stuff the bottom half of the arm. Leave the top flat.
➡️ Round 10: Pinch the opening flat and make 4 sc across both layers to close the arm.
Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.
Assembly and Final Details
- Mount the head to the body. Using your tapestry needle and the long black tail from the torso, whipstitch Round 20 of the body to Round 19 of the head. Secure tightly.
- Attach the arms. Sew the flat top of each arm exactly between Rounds 18 and 19 of the torso, centering them on the sides.
- Cut the eyes. Cut two large, sweeping teardrop shapes from the white felt. Cut matching shapes from the red felt, approximately 3mm larger on all sides to create a border. Glue the white felt onto the red felt.
- Anchor the gaze. Pin the eyes directly onto the Black head, spanning Rounds 13 through 17. Ensure they are spaced at least 8 stitches apart at the top, angling sharply inward toward the center bridge. Glue or carefully sew them into place.
- Surface embroider the spider emblem. Using a scrap length of red yarn or red felt, apply the central body to the chest (Rounds 13-16 of the torso) and stitch four legs extending outward on each side.
- Finally, slip the Red hood over the back of the head.
