Welcome, fellow yarn lovers! If you are just starting your crochet journey, finding the right project is key to building your confidence without getting overwhelmed. That is why this easy crochet bookmark is one of my absolute favorite beginner patterns.
Not only is it a quick and satisfying make, but it is also wonderfully practical. In just a short amount of time, you will master foundational stitches, practice your yarn tension, and create a charming handmade accessory for your favorite reads.
Materials & Tools Needed
- Yarn: Lightweight yarn (DK or Sport weight) or standard cotton yarn for a neat, flat finish.
- Crochet Hook: Size 3.5 mm (E-4) or 4 mm (G-6) hook, depending on your yarn choice.
- Notions: A pair of sharp scissors and a yarn needle for weaving in ends.
- Optional: A piece of cardboard for making a decorative tassel.
Abbreviations & Pattern Notes
- Ch: Chain stitch
- Sc: Single crochet
- Dc: Double crochet
- St(s): Stitch(es)
- Notes: This pattern uses US crochet terminology. The turning chain at the beginning of rows does not count as a stitch.
Step-by-Step Pattern Instructions
- Foundation Chain: Ch 35 (or adjust the chain length to fit your preferred book size). Make sure your chain is not too tight.
- Row 1: Work 1 sc in the 2nd ch from your hook, and 1 sc in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. (34 sc)
- Row 2: Work 1 dc in each st across. Ch 2, turn. (34 dc)
- Row 3: Work 1 sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. (34 sc)
- Row 4 (Optional Border): Repeat Row 2 once more for a slightly wider bookmark, or proceed straight to fastening off if you prefer a slim design.
- Fastening Off: Cut your yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail. Pull the tail completely through the last loop on your hook to secure the knot.
Finishing & Helpful Tips
- Weave in your ends: Use your yarn needle to neatly thread the starting and ending tails back through the stitches so your bookmark looks polished.
- Practice consistent tension: Because this project is small, pay close attention to keeping your stitches even so your bookmark stays straight and rectangular.
- Add a tassel: Wrap yarn around a small piece of cardboard 15-20 times, tie it off at one end, and attach it to the bottom of your bookmark for extra flair.
- Block for crisp edges: If your cotton yarn curls slightly, lightly steam or block your finished bookmark so it lays completely flat between your pages.
