Welcome back, yarn friends! If you are looking for a quick, satisfying project that is as practical as it is pretty, you are in the right place. Today, we are making an easy, portable crocheted bag that’s perfect for farmers’ market runs, beach days, or carrying your everyday essentials.
This project uses basic stitches and minimal materials, making it wonderfully accessible for beginners while remaining a fun, fast make for experienced crafters. Let’s grab our yarn and dive right in!
Materials & Tools Needed
- Medium-weight (Worsted / Category 4) cotton yarn — approx. 300–400 yards
- Crochet hook: 5.0 mm (H-8)
- Stitch markers
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
- Scissors
- Optional: Fabric lining and closure (button or magnetic snap)
Abbreviations & Pattern Notes
- US Terminology
- ch: chain
- sc: single crochet
- hdc: half-double crochet
- sl st: slip stitch
- st(s): stitch(es)
- Note: The bag is worked from the base up in rounds. Do not join unless specified. Use a stitch marker to keep track of the beginning of your rounds.
Step-by-Step Pattern Instructions
- The Base: Ch 30. Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, work 1 hdc in each ch across. Work 3 hdc in the last ch to turn, then work down the opposite side of the foundation chain. Work 2 hdc in the final st. Join with a sl st to the first hdc. (Total: 60 sts)
- Building the Sides: Ch 1 (does not count as a st here and throughout). Work 1 hdc in each st around. Do not join; continue working in a spiral, moving your stitch marker up each round.
- Height: Continue working 1 hdc in each st around until the bag reaches your desired height (approximately 35 to 40 rounds, or about 12 inches deep).
- Top Border: To give the bag a clean, sturdy edge, switch to sc and work 1 round of sc around the entire opening. Sl st to the first st and fasten off.
- Handles: Join yarn at the desired placement on the rim. Ch 50 (or your preferred handle length), skip a section of the bag rim, and sc securely into the opposite side. Work a round of sl st back along the foundation chain for extra sturdy handles. Repeat for the second handle on the opposite side.
Finishing & Helpful Tips
- Weave in ends securely: Cotton yarn has great durability, but make sure to weave your tails back and forth a few times so they don’t pop loose with daily use.
- Maintain consistent tension: Keeping an even grip on your yarn ensures the bag holds its structured, professional shape without sagging.
- Add a fabric lining: If you plan to carry heavier items like books or laptops, sewing in a simple fabric lining prevents the crochet stitches from stretching over time.
- Block your finished bag: Lightly steam or wet-block your bag to align the stitches neatly and give it a crisp, polished finish.
