Materials & Tools Needed

  • Sport or DK weight yarn in main llama color (cream, white, or brown) and accent colors for the blanket/scarf
  • Matching crochet hook (typically 2.5mm or 3.0mm for tight amigurumi stitches)
  • Polyester fiberfill stuffing
  • Embroidery floss in black and pink for the face
  • Yarn needle for sewing and weaving in ends
  • Stitch marker
  • Keyring or lobster clasp
  • Scissors

Abbreviations & Pattern Notes

  • US Terminology
  • MR: Magic Ring
  • sc: Single Crochet
  • inc: Increase (2 sc in the same stitch)
  • dec: Invisible Decrease (sc 2 stitches together)
  • sl st: Slip Stitch
  • st(s): Stitch(es)
  • Note: Work in continuous rounds without joining unless otherwise stated. Use a stitch marker to keep track of the first stitch of each round.

Step-by-Step Pattern Instructions

  1. Body & Head: Start with an MR in main yarn color. Round 1: 6 sc in MR (6). Round 2: inc in each st around (12). Rounds 3–6: sc in each st around (12). Stuff the body firmly. Round 7: (dec) 6 times (6). Fasten off, leaving a long tail to close the top and attach the keyring.
  2. Legs (Make 4): MR with 5 sc (5). Rounds 1–2: sc in each st around (5). Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing. Lightly stuff or leave unstuffed depending on preference.
  3. Ears (Make 2): Ch 3, starting in the 2nd ch from hook: sl st, sc in next ch (2). Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.
  4. Assembly: Sew the four legs securely to the bottom of the body. Attach the small ears to the top of the head. Use black embroidery floss to stitch a sweet, simple snout and sleepy eyes, and add a tiny touch of pink for the cheeks.
  5. Finishing: Secure your keyring or lobster clasp firmly to the top of the head using the remaining yarn tail or a small length of scrap yarn, weaving in all loose ends securely.

Finishing & Helpful Tips

  • Use a hook one size smaller than recommended for your yarn weight to create tight, dense stitches that prevent fiberfill from peeking through.
  • Embroidered facial details are safer and allow for more expressive personality than plastic safety eyes on miniature keychains.
  • Add a tiny crocheted blanket or a scrap-yarn scarf around the llama’s neck to give your keychain an extra pop of color and charm.
  • Secure your keyring attachment with an extra double-knot to ensure your handmade llama easily withstands daily use on keys or backpacks.
