Crocheted monkey car key cover

Welcome back to the blog, my crafty friends! If you are looking for a fun, quick project that adds a touch of personality to your everyday routine, you are going to love this one. Today, we are making an adorable crocheted monkey car key cover!

This charming little accessory does double duty: it protects your keys from scratches while bringing a smile to your face every time you open your car door. It also makes a wonderful, thoughtful handmade gift for family and friends. Let grab your yarn and hooks, and let’s dive right in!

Materials & Tools Needed

  • Sport or DK weight cotton yarn (Brown for the body, tan or beige for the face and ears)
  • Matching crochet hook (e.g., 2.5mm or 3.0mm to ensure tight stitches)
  • Small amount of black embroidery floss for the smile
  • Two small black beads or safety eyes for the eyes
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Stitch marker

Abbreviations & Pattern Notes

  • US Terminology
  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • inc: single crochet increase (2 sc in the same stitch)
  • dec: single crochet decrease (sc 2 together)
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • Note: Work in continuous rounds unless otherwise stated. Use a stitch marker to keep track of the beginning of each round.

Step-by-Step Pattern Instructions

  1. Body Base: Using brown yarn, ch 8, join with a sl st to form a ring. Alternatively, start with an adjustable magic ring.
  2. Round 1: Work 8 sc into the ring (8 sts).
  3. Round 2: [Inc] around (16 sts).
  4. Round 3-10: Sc in each st around (16 sts per round). This creates the sleeve that will slide over your car key. Adjust the length here if your key is particularly long or short.
  5. Muzzle/Face: Using tan yarn, ch 4. Work 1 sc in the 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in the next ch, 3 sc in the last ch. Working down the opposite side of the chain, 1 sc in the next ch, 2 sc in the last ch (8 sts). Fasten off, leaving a tail to sew onto the body.
  6. Ears (Make 2): Using brown yarn, make a magic ring and work 6 sc into the ring. Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
  7. Assembly: Sew the tan muzzle onto the lower front of the body. Embroider a simple smile with black floss. Attach the safety eyes (or sew on black beads) just above the muzzle. Sew the ears to the upper sides of the head.

Finishing & Helpful Tips

  • Maintain a firm and consistent tension to ensure your key cover fits snugly and holds its shape over time.
  • Cotton yarn is recommended over acrylic because it stretches less and provides better durability against everyday pocket and purse wear.
  • Double-check the fit of your key before fastening off the body; you want it snug enough that it won’t slip off accidentally.
  • Weave in all loose ends securely on the inside of the cover to keep the exterior looking neat and clean.
