Materials & Tools Needed

  • Yarn: Worsted weight (Medium/Category 4) cotton or acrylic yarn in main bear color (brown, tan, or cream) and a small amount of a contrasting color for the muzzle (beige or white).
  • Crochet Hook: Size G/6 (4.0 mm) or H/8 (5.0 mm)—choose a hook slightly smaller than recommended on your yarn label to create a firmer, sturdier fabric.
  • Notions: Yarn needle for weaving in ends, stitch markers, and a pair of scissors.
  • Embellishments: Safety eyes (6mm or 8mm) and black embroidery floss for the nose and smile (or scraps of black yarn).

Abbreviations & Pattern Notes

  • US Terminology
  • Ch: Chain
  • St(s): Stitch(es)
  • Sl St: Slip Stitch
  • Sc: Single Crochet
  • Inc: Increase (2 Sc in the same stitch)
  • Dec: Decrease (Sc 2 stitches together)
  • Rnd: Round
  • Note: Unless otherwise specified, work in continuous rounds without joining, using a stitch marker to track the beginning of each round.

Step-by-Step Pattern Instructions

  1. Base & Body: Using your main bear color, start with a magic ring. Work 6 Sc into the ring (6 sts). Rnd 2: Inc in each st around (12 sts). Rnd 3: [Sc in next st, Inc in next st] 6 times (18 sts). Continue increasing in this manner until the base matches the width of your phone’s bottom edge (usually about 24 to 30 stitches total).
  2. Building the Pouch: Once the flat base is the desired size, work 1 Sc in the back loop only (BLO) for one round to establish the edge. Then, work even in Sc in both loops for every round until the pouch reaches roughly two-thirds the height of your cell phone. Fasten off and weave in ends.
  3. Bear Snout: Using your contrasting muzzle color, Ch 4. Starting in the second chain from the hook, work 2 Sc, 3 Sc in the last chain, and working along the opposite side of the foundation chain, work 1 Sc, Inc (8 sts). Sl st to join, fasten off, and leave a long tail for sewing.
  4. Ears (Make 2): Using the main color, make a magic ring and work 6 Sc into it. Join with a Sl St, fasten off, and leave a long tail for sewing.
  5. Assembly & Face: Attach the safety eyes to the upper front portion of the pouch. Embroider a cute little nose and mouth centered just below the eyes using your black embroidery floss. Sew the snout slightly below the nose (you can lightly stuff it with a tiny scrap of yarn for dimension if desired). Finally, attach the ears securely to the top edge of the holder.

Finishing & Helpful Tips

  • Maintain Firm Tension: Keep your stitches nice and snug so the holder has enough structural integrity to support the weight of your smartphone without sagging.
  • Test the Fit: Slip your phone into the pouch halfway through the body portion to ensure it fits comfortably and won’t tip over.
  • Child-Safe Options: If gifting to a young child, embroider the eyes with black yarn instead of using plastic safety eyes to keep it entirely baby-safe.
  • Weave Securely: Make sure all yarn tails are neatly woven in and trimmed so your finished bear looks polished and professional.
