Welcome, fellow crafters! There is something truly special about creating handmade accessories, and this crochet flower keychain is one of my favorite quick projects. It’s the perfect way to use up yarn scraps, practice your stitch technique, and add a personal, charming touch to your keys or bag.
Whether you are making this as a thoughtful handmade gift or a little treat for yourself, you will love how quickly these bloom. Let’s grab our hooks and get started on this delightful, beginner-friendly project!
Materials & Tools Needed
- Yarn: A small amount of cotton yarn (DK or Worsted weight works best for durability).
- Crochet Hook: 2.5mm to 3.5mm (choose a hook size slightly smaller than recommended on your yarn label to keep stitches tight).
- Keychain Hardware: Metal split ring or clasp.
- Yarn Needle: For weaving in ends and assembly.
- Scissors: For cutting yarn.
- Optional: Beads, buttons, or sequins for the flower center.
Abbreviations & Pattern Notes
- Ch: Chain
- Sl st: Slip stitch
- Sc: Single crochet
- Hdc: Half double crochet
- Dc: Double crochet
- St(s): Stitch(es)
- Pattern Note: We will be working in US crochet terms. Stitches should be worked tightly to ensure the flower holds its shape on your keychain.
Step-by-Step Pattern Instructions
- Foundation: Make a slip knot and chain 4. Join with a sl st to the first chain to form a ring.
- Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as your first dc). Work 11 dc into the ring. Join with a sl st to the top of the starting ch-3. (12 sts total).
- Round 2 (Petals): In the next stitch, work the following sequence: (1 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc). Repeat this sequence in every other stitch around to create 6 petals.
- Fasten Off: After the final petal, sl st into the base of the first petal to secure. Fasten off, leaving a 6-inch tail for attaching your hardware.
- Optional Fullness: For a more substantial keychain, repeat steps 1–4 to create a second flower and sew the two pieces together, back-to-back.
Finishing & Helpful Tips
- Attachment Method: Thread your yarn tail onto your needle and pass it through the keychain ring. Sew it securely to the center or top of the flower. Make several passes through the hardware to ensure it won’t snap off with daily use.
- Adding Flair: To make your flower pop, sew a decorative button or a bead into the very center of the flower before you finish your last knot.
- Weaving Ends: Always weave your yarn tails back and forth through the inner rounds of the flower on the backside to ensure they are hidden and secure.
- Tension Tip: Because keychains experience a lot of wear, keep your tension consistent. If your stitches feel too loose, try going down a half-size in hook diameter.
