This project is a study in advanced amigurumi geometry. We will balance the wide, heavy facial structure of our cartoon muse with a softened baby-schema proportion, ensuring every single stitch serves a structural purpose. Grab your favorite cotton yarn, maintain your stitch markers carefully, and let us bring this sophisticated gardener to life together.
Double-space your thoughts, clear your workbench, and let us begin.
About This Creation
This premium design relies heavily on strategic asymmetry to build character without sacrificing structural integrity. The signature wide jawline is formed using concentrated increases on the sides of the muzzle, while the body utilizes a low center of gravity to sit beautifully inside the custom-molded denim overalls. By placing the eyes wide-set and remarkably low on the face, we evoke a sense of innocence that contrasts wonderfully with his iconic, intense brow line.

The Pattern
The Muzzle (Creamy Tan Yarn)
We begin with the defining feature of our gardener’s face. The muzzle is worked in rounds around a starting chain to create an oval shape with enhanced lower jowls.
➡️ Round 1: Chain 9. Starting in second ch from hook: 7 sc, 3 sc in the last chain. Turning to work along the opposite side of the chain: 6 sc, inc (18)
➡️ Round 2: inc, 6 sc, [inc] x 3, 6 sc, [inc] x 2 (24)
➡️ Round 3: 1 sc, inc, 6 sc, [1 sc, inc] x 3, 6 sc, [1 sc, inc] x 2 (30)
➡️ Round 4: 2 sc, inc, 6 sc, [2 sc, inc] x 3, 6 sc, [2 sc, inc] x 2 (36)
➡️ Round 5: 3 sc, inc, 6 sc, [3 sc, inc] x 3, 6 sc, [3 sc, inc] x 2 (42)
➡️ Round 6 to Round 9: sc in each st around (42)

Upper Limbs & Striped Sleeves (Crimson Red, Bright White, and Walnut Brown)
We start at the sleeve edge and work down to the fingertips. Make two identical arms.
➡️ Round 1: Start with Crimson Red yarn. 6 sc in magic ring (6)
➡️ Round 2: [inc] x 6 (12)
➡️ Round 3: [1 sc, inc] x 6 (18)

➡️ Round 19: [4 sc, dec] x 3 (15)
➡️ Round 20 to Round 24: sc in each st around (15)
Now, we construct the individual fingers directly onto the arm to eliminate excessive sewing. ➡️ Finger 1: 5 sc, chain 1, turn. Work 3 rounds of 5 sc around this mini-tube. Close and fasten off. ➡️ Finger 2, 3, and 4: Reattach yarn to the next open stitches of Round 24, allocation 3-4 stitches per finger, creating three additional elongated digits. Stuff the palm lightly, leave the fingers flat, and sew any small gaps between digits closed.
Lower Limbs & Three-Toed Feet (Walnut Brown Yarn)
Make two identical legs. We start by forming the prominent toes.
➡️ Toes (Make 3 for each leg): 6 sc in magic ring. Round 2: [1 sc, inc] x 3 (9). Round 3: 9 sc. Fasten off on the first two toes, keep yarn attached on the third.
➡️ Round 4 (Joining Toes): Connect the three toes together by crocheting around the outer edges of all three: 4 sc on first toe, 4 sc on middle toe, 9 sc on third toe, 5 sc on middle toe, 5 sc on first toe (27)
➡️ Round 5 to Round 7: sc in each st around (27)
➡️ Round 8: [7 sc, dec] x 3 (24)
➡️ Round 9: [2 sc, dec] x 6 (18)
➡️ Round 10 to Round 16: sc in each st around (18) Fasten off, leaving a long thread for sewing to the bottom of the body.
The Gardener’s Overalls (Denim Blue Yarn)
Use a slightly larger hook (2.5 mm) to ensure the denim fits perfectly over the striped lower torso.
➡️ Leg Cuff 1: Chain 24, join with a sl st to form a ring. Rows 1-4: 24 sc around. Fasten off. ➡️ Leg Cuff 2: Repeat instructions for Cuff 1, but do not cut the yarn.
➡️ Round 5 (Joining Cuffs): Chain 3, join to Leg Cuff 1 with a sc. 23 sc around Cuff 1, 3 sc along the connecting chain, 24 sc around Cuff 2, 3 sc along the reverse side of the chain (54)
➡️ Round 6 to Round 14: sc in each st around (54)
➡️ Round 15: [7 sc, dec] x 6 (48)
➡️ Round 16: sc in each st around (48)
Now, shape the front bib section by working in rows across the front 16 stitches only. ➡️ Bib Row 1 to Row 8: 16 sc, ch 1, turn (16) Fasten off.
➡️ Straps (Make 2): Chain 26. Starting in second ch from hook, work 25 hdc across. Sew the straps from the back rim of the trousers, crossing them over the shoulders, and secure them to the top corners of the front bib with small yellow accent stitches. Use yellow yarn to embroider faux top-stitching details around the bib pocket.

➡️ Round 18: [11 sc, inc] x 6 (78)
➡️ Round 19: [12 sc, inc] x 6 (84)
➡️ Round 20: sc in each st around (84) Fasten off. Wrap a thin strip of blue chained yarn around the base of the hat, tying it into a dainty bow on the side.
The Cross-Body Messenger Bag (Sunflower Yellow Yarn)
➡️ Chain 11. Work 10 sc down the chain. Turn, work 8 rows of 10 sc to form a small rectangle. Chain 35 to create the long cross-body strap, reattaching to the opposite side of the bag. Embroider a tiny orange triangle and green line to form a mini carrot motif on the front flap.
The Straw Picnic Basket (Light Tan Yarn)
➡️ Round 1: 6 sc in magic ring (6). Round 2: [inc] x 6 (12). Round 3: [1 sc, inc] x 6 (18). Round 4: Working in BLO, 18 sc. Round 5-8: 18 sc. Fasten off. Attach a chain of 10 across the top rim to make the handle. Tuck a tiny piece of red gingham fabric inside.
The Watermelon Slice
➡️ Using red yarn, make 6 sc in a magic ring. Round 2: [inc] x 6 (12). Fold the circle in half to create a semi-circle. Change to white yarn, work 6 sc along the curved edge, then change to green yarn and work one final row of 6 sc along the outer curve. Sew minor black seed details onto the red surface.
Assembly Instructions
🪡 Step 1: Pin the Creamy Tan Muzzle over Rounds 12 to 24 of the main head. Sew it down carefully, adding extra stuffing right before closing to create those proud, plump jowls.
🪡 Step 2: Sew the thick, angled black eyebrows right above the white felt eye patches to give him his classic, serious gaze. Add the large oval black nose to the upper center of the muzzle.
🪡 Step 3: Attach the arms symmetrically to the sides of the torso, immediately below the neckline change.
🪡 Step 4: Secure the wide-toed feet to the base of the body, angling them slightly outward so he stands beautifully inside his denim overalls.
🪡 Step 5: Finish your masterpiece by slipping on the cross-body bag, positioning the sunhat elegantly on his head, and pinning the tiny red and orange accent flowers near his left ear.
