The Pattern
HEAD
Worked top-down in continuous rounds. Begin with peach/skin yarn.
R1: 6 sc in magic ring (6)
R2: [inc] x6 (12)
R3: [sc, inc] x6 (18)
R4: [2 sc, inc] x6 (24)
R5: [3 sc, inc] x6 (30)
R6: [4 sc, inc] x6 (36)
R7: [5 sc, inc] x6 (42)
R8: [6 sc, inc] x6 (48)
R9: [7 sc, inc] x6 (54)
R10-R12: sc around (54) — 3 even rounds
Cheek shaping begins. Increases are placed asymmetrically on the front face plane to create soft, rounded cheek mounds. The front of the head should be identified using your stitch marker as the center-front reference point. The following rounds assume your marker sits at the center-back. Rotate your work so the marker is at the back before beginning cheek shaping.
R13: sc 4, inc, sc 3, inc, sc 9, inc, sc 3, inc, sc 31 (58)
(Increases fall at stitches 5, 9, 19, and 23 on the front arc — these are the cheek zones. The long stretches of 9 and 31 single crochets span the center-face and the entire back of the head, respectively.)
R14: sc 5, inc, sc 4, inc, sc 12, inc, sc 4, inc, sc 29 (62)
(Increases shift slightly outward to build cheek volume without creating points.)
R15: sc around (62) — settling round, cheeks now visibly rounded
R16: sc 6, inc, sc 5, inc, sc 49 (64)
(Final cheek boost — two increases placed at the apex of each cheek mound.)
R17-R20: sc around (64) — 4 even rounds, cheeks fully formed
Eye placement: Insert 9 mm safety eyes between Rounds 13 and 14, positioned 9 stitches apart. Center each eye above its corresponding cheek mound. The wide spacing and low placement create the signature Krocheta “Gaze of Innocence.” Do not attach the backing washers until you are satisfied with the positioning — adjust as needed before locking.
R21: [6 sc, dec] x8 (56)
R22: sc around (56)
R23: [5 sc, dec] x8 (48)
R24: [4 sc, dec] x8 (40)
R25: [3 sc, dec] x8 (32)
R26: [2 sc, dec] x8 (24)
Firmly stuff the head. Use small amounts of fiberfill at a time, working it into the cheek cavities with the back of your hook or a stuffing tool. The head should feel dense but not rock-hard. The cheeks should be plump and visibly rounded from every angle. Do not under-stuff.
R27: [sc, dec] x8 (16)
Add any final stuffing needed to maintain shape.
R28: [dec] x8 (8)
Fasten off, leaving a 12-inch (30 cm) tail for sewing to the body. Thread the tail through the front loops of the remaining 8 stitches and pull tight to close. Weave the tail through the neck opening and leave hanging for later assembly.
BODY
Worked bottom-up in continuous rounds. Begin with peach/skin yarn.
R1: 6 sc in magic ring (6)
R2: [inc] x6 (12)
R3: [sc, inc] x6 (18)
R4: [2 sc, inc] x6 (24)
R5: [3 sc, inc] x6 (30)
R6: [4 sc, inc] x6 (36)
R7: [5 sc, inc] x6 (42)
R8-R9: sc around (42) — 2 even rounds, belly takes shape
R10: [5 sc, dec] x6 (36)
R11: sc around (36)
R12: [7 sc, dec] x4 (32)
(This brings the neck opening to 32 stitches, which will match the head’s neck circumference for a clean seam.)
R13: sc around (32)
Fasten off, leaving a 10-inch (25 cm) tail. Stuff the body firmly — slightly firmer than the head to provide a stable core. The body should feel solid and rounded, with a gentle pear shape tapering toward the neck. Leave the tail for sewing to the head.
ARMS (Make 2 — Right Arm Raised Higher for Cup-Holding)
Worked from shoulder down in continuous rounds. Begin with peach/skin yarn. The right arm (Arm A) will be positioned to hold the World Cup aloft; the left arm (Arm B) will be raised in celebration at a slightly different angle. The shaping is identical for both arms; positioning during assembly creates the asymmetry.
R1: 6 sc in magic ring (6)
R2: [sc, inc] x3 (9)
R3: [2 sc, inc] x3 (12)
R4-R7: sc around (12) — 4 even rounds
Elbow sculpting: The elbow crease is created by working one round in back loop only. This produces a subtle horizontal ridge that bends naturally when the arm is positioned.
R8: BLO sc around (12)
R9-R11: sc around (12) — forearm
Thumb bump: In the final round, one isolated increase creates the thumb.
R12: sc 1, inc (in stitch 2 for thumb), sc 9 (13)
R13: sc around (13)
Begin stuffing the arm lightly. The upper arm should have moderate stuffing; the forearm and hand should be softer for flexibility.
R14: [sc, dec] x4, sc 1 (9)
Add final light stuffing.
R15: [dec] x4, sc 1 (5)
Fasten off, leaving an 8-inch (20 cm) tail. Thread through remaining stitches and pull closed. Flatten the hand slightly. The thumb bump should be visible on the inner edge of the hand. Leave tail for sewing to body.
LEGS (Make 2)
Worked from sole upward in continuous rounds. Begin with black yarn for cleats, then switch to white for socks, then to peach/skin for the leg. The flat sole is created by working into both sides of a foundation chain.
Cleat sole (black):
Ch 6.
R1: Starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc 4, 3 sc in last ch. Rotate to work along the opposite side of the chain: sc 3, inc in last st (12)
R2: inc, sc 3, [inc] x3, sc 3, [inc] x2 (18)
R3: BLO sc around (18) — this creates the sole ridge
R4-R5: sc around (18) — cleat body
R6: [sc, dec] x6 (12)
Switch to white yarn for socks.
R7: BLO sc around (12) — sock cuff ridge
R8-R10: sc around (12) — 3 rounds for sock height
Switch to peach/skin yarn for leg.
R11: BLO sc around (12)
R12: [3 sc, inc] x3 (15)
R13-R15: sc around (15)
Knee sculpting: Back-loop-only round creates the knee crease.
R16: BLO sc around (15)
R17-R18: sc around (15)
R19: [3 sc, dec] x3 (12)
Stuff the leg firmly through the cleat and sock sections. The thigh above the knee should have lighter stuffing to allow the leg to bend slightly at the knee crease during posing.
R20: [2 sc, dec] x3 (9)
R21: [sc, dec] x3 (6)
Fasten off, leaving an 8-inch (20 cm) tail. Thread through remaining stitches, pull closed. Leave tail for sewing to body.
Cleat detail: Using white embroidery floss or thin white yarn, stitch two tiny crossed lines on the top of each cleat to mimic laces.
EARS (Make 2)
Worked in continuous rounds with peach/skin yarn.
R1: 4 sc in magic ring (4)
R2: [sc, inc] x2 (6)
R3: [2 sc, inc] x2 (8)
R4: sc around (8)
Fasten off, leaving a 6-inch (15 cm) tail. Flatten the ear — do not stuff. The ears will be sewn to the sides of the head between Rounds 16 and 19, aligned with the outer corners of the eyes.
ARGENTINA JERSEY
Worked from the bottom up in continuous rounds. The jersey is worked directly onto the body or as a separate piece — this pattern provides it as a separate piece for ease of striping and assembly. The body of the jersey uses alternating rounds of white and sky blue to create the iconic stripes. Begin with white yarn at the hem.
Hem ribbing (white):
Ch 33, join with sl st to form a ring (32 ch — ensure the ring fits over the widest part of the body).
R1: sc around (32)
R2-R3: BLO sc around (32) — ribbed hem effect
Jersey body — begin stripe sequence:
R4 (white): sc around (32)
R5 (sky blue): sc around (32)
R6 (white): sc around (32)
R7 (sky blue): sc around (32)
R8 (white): sc around (32)
R9 (sky blue): sc around (32)
R10 (white): sc around (32)
R11 (sky blue): sc around (32)
The jersey should now have 4 blue stripes and 4 white stripes (including the hem).
Neckline shaping:
R12 (white): [6 sc, dec] x4 (28)
R13 (white): sc around (28)
R14 (white): [5 sc, dec] x4 (24)
Fasten off, weave in end. The neckline opening should be wide enough to accommodate the head-neck seam.
Sleeves (make 2, white):
R1: 16 ch, join to form ring
R2-R4: sc around (16) — 3 rounds
R5: [2 sc, dec] x4 (12)
R6: sc around (12)
Fasten off, leaving tail for sewing to armholes. The sleeves will be sewn to the upper arms during assembly, positioned so the jersey covers the shoulder area.
Jersey number: Using sky blue yarn and a tapestry needle, surface-embroider the number “10” on the back of the jersey. Use a simple backstitch or chain stitch. The number should be centered and approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) tall. For the front, embroider a small Argentina crest or a tiny “AFA” monogram in sky blue on the left chest (optional but recommended for detail).
Captain’s armband: Using golden yellow yarn, chain 16. Sew this tiny band around the left sleeve, just above the elbow. Secure with a few stitches.
SHORTS
Worked from waist down in continuous rounds. Use midnight blue or black yarn.
Waistband:
Ch 33, join with sl st to form a ring (32 ch).
R1: sc around (32)
R2-R3: BLO sc around (32) — ribbed waistband
Shorts body:
R4-R9: sc around (32) — 6 even rounds
Leg openings — divide for crotch:
R10: sc 16, skip 16, join with sl st to first sc of this round to create one leg opening (16)
R11: sc around (16)
R12: [2 sc, dec] x4 (12)
Fasten off, weave in end.
Rejoin yarn at the remaining 16 stitches for the second leg opening. Repeat R11-R12. Fasten off, weave in ends.
The shorts will be pulled onto the body before the legs are attached. The waistband should sit at the natural waistline, just below the belly curve.
HAIR
Messi’s signature dark brown hair is built in two parts: a crocheted cap that covers the crown, and individual strands attached to the cap for the side-swept, tousled look. Use a slightly textured or matte dark brown yarn for the most natural appearance.
Hair cap (dark brown):
R1: 6 sc in magic ring (6)
R2: [inc] x6 (12)
R3: [sc, inc] x6 (18)
R4: [2 sc, inc] x6 (24)
R5: [3 sc, inc] x6 (30)
R6: [4 sc, inc] x6 (36)
R7: [5 sc, inc] x6 (42)
R8: [6 sc, inc] x6 (48)
R9: [7 sc, inc] x6 (54)
R10-R14: sc around (54) — 5 even rounds
Check fit on the head. The cap should cover from the crown (magic ring center) down to just above the ears. Adjust the number of even rounds if needed based on your tension.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Do not close — the cap remains open at the bottom.
Strand attachment:
Cut approximately 40-50 strands of dark brown yarn, each 5-6 inches (12-15 cm) long. Working from the crown forward, attach each strand to the hair cap using a latch hook method or by folding the strand in half, pulling the loop through a stitch on the cap, and drawing the tails through the loop. This creates a secure, natural-looking attachment.
Placement guide:
- Crown area (top of cap): strands attached densely, standing slightly upward
- Sides: strands swept diagonally toward the right (Messi’s signature side-sweep), attached along the side of the cap
- Front hairline: strands attached in a gentle curve across the forehead, falling slightly over the brow — not covering the eyes
- Back: strands attached in rows, falling naturally downward to the nape of the neck
Once all strands are attached, trim and shape with scissors. The overall effect should be slightly tousled, side-swept, and boyish — not overly neat. Messi’s hair has movement. Let the yarn remember that.
Optional beard stubble: Using a needle felting tool and a tiny amount of dark brown or charcoal roving, lightly felt a shadow along the jawline and chin. Alternatively, use a single strand of dark brown embroidery floss to make tiny spaced-apart French knots across the lower face. Keep it subtle — a suggestion of stubble, not a full beard.
WORLD CUP TROPHY
The trophy is assembled from four components: the golden globe, the column, the two handles, and the malachite green base. Use gold metallic yarn held double with a strand of bright yellow for maximum shimmer. If metallic yarn is unavailable, a bright golden-yellow DK yarn works beautifully.
Globe (gold, make 1):
R1: 4 sc in magic ring (4)
R2: [inc] x4 (8)
R3: [sc, inc] x4 (12)
R4: [2 sc, inc] x4 (16)
R5-R6: sc around (16)
R7: [2 sc, dec] x4 (12)
R8: [sc, dec] x4 (8)
Stuff the globe firmly.
R9: [dec] x4 (4)
Fasten off, thread tail through remaining stitches, pull closed. The globe should be a near-perfect sphere.
Column (gold, make 1):
R1: 4 sc in magic ring (4)
R2: [sc, inc] x2 (6)
R3-R6: sc around (6) — 4 even rounds
Lightly stuff. Fasten off, leaving tail for sewing.
Handles (gold, make 2):
Ch 7, sl st in first ch to form a ring.
R1: sc 7 around (7)
R2: sc around (7)
Flatten. Fasten off, leaving tail. These form the iconic curved handles on either side of the trophy.
Base (malachite green, make 1):
R1: 6 sc in magic ring (6)
R2: [inc] x6 (12)
R3: BLO sc around (12) — creates the base edge
R4: sc around (12)
R5: [dec] x6 (6)
Stuff firmly. Fasten off, close opening. The base should be a flat-bottomed disc with a slight dome on top.
Trophy assembly:
- Sew the column to the top center of the green base.
- Sew the globe to the top of the column.
- Sew one handle to each side of the column, curving outward. The handles should attach near the top of the column (just below the globe) and near the bottom (just above the base), forming a graceful arc on each side.
- For an optional detail, embroider a tiny band of white around the center of the globe to suggest the decorative band on the actual World Cup trophy.
ASSEMBLY
Work in the following order for the cleanest result. Pin all pieces before sewing. Check proportions from every angle before committing to stitches.
1. Head to Body
Align the 32-stitch neck opening of the head with the 32-stitch neck opening of the body. The head’s seam should face the back. Whipstitch through both loops around the entire circumference. The neck should be secure and slightly compressed — this creates a subtle neck definition. Add or remove stuffing through any small gap before closing completely.
2. Ears to Head
Sew ears between Rounds 16 and 19 on the sides of the head. Position each ear so it aligns vertically with the outer corner of the eye on its respective side. Ears should sit flat against the head, not protruding. Use the tail yarn and a ladder stitch for an invisible seam.
3. Legs to Body
Position the body so the belly faces forward. Sew legs to the bottom of the body, one on each side. The inner thighs should be approximately 4 stitches apart at the crotch. The legs should angle slightly outward for a natural stance. The cleats should rest flat on the ground when the doll is seated. For a standing display, use a doll stand or position the legs with a wider stance.
4. Arms to Body
Right arm (Arm A, cup-holding): Position on the right side of the body, sewn at the shoulder. Angle the arm upward at approximately 45 degrees. The elbow crease (BLO round) should bend naturally, allowing the forearm to extend upward and slightly forward. The hand should be positioned to cradle the World Cup trophy.
Left arm (Arm B, celebratory): Position on the left side of the body, sewn at the shoulder. Angle this arm slightly higher than the right — approximately 60 degrees upward — in a celebratory pose. The elbow crease should bend gently.
Sew both arms securely through the shoulder joint. Test the pose by placing the World Cup in the right hand before finalizing the left arm position. The two arms together should create a triumphant, joyful silhouette.
5. Jersey
Pull the jersey over the head and body. The hem should sit at the natural waistline. The neckline should rest neatly against the neck seam. Adjust the fabric so the stripes are straight and the number “10” is centered on the back. Tack the jersey to the body with a few hidden stitches at the side seams and under the arms to prevent shifting.
6. Sleeves
Slide each sleeve onto its respective arm. Sew the top edge of the sleeve to the shoulder area of the jersey. The sleeve should cover the upper arm from shoulder to just past the elbow. Secure with hidden stitches.
7. Shorts
Pull the shorts onto the body over the jersey hem. The waistband should sit just below the jersey hem, covering the transition. The leg openings should align with the legs. If needed, tack the shorts at the waistband with a few stitches.
8. Hair Cap and Strands
Sew the hair cap to the crown of the head using the long tail. The cap should cover from the crown down to just above the ears and the nape of the neck. Secure around the entire perimeter. Once the cap is attached, the attached strands will fall naturally. Trim and style as desired. The side-sweep should angle from the left part toward the right temple.
9. Captain’s Armband
Wrap the golden chain around the left sleeve just above the elbow. Secure with two stitches. Trim excess.
10. World Cup
Place the trophy in the right hand. The column should rest in the palm, with the globe above the hand. Use a few hidden stitches through the hand and the column to secure. The fingers (if you shaped them) can curl slightly around the column. Alternatively, use a tiny dab of fabric glue inside the palm for invisible security.
11. Face Details
Using white embroidery floss, stitch a tiny highlight at the 1 o’clock position on each eye. A single straight stitch, approximately 2 mm long, is all that’s needed. This brings the eyes to life with a wet, reflective quality.
If adding beard stubble: Using a needle felting tool or French knots, apply a very light shadow along the jawline, chin, and upper lip area. Less is more — the suggestion of stubble reads better than heavy application.
Finishing Notes
Take a moment to study your little Messi from every angle. Adjust the hair with your fingers. Tilt the head slightly — a subtle angle makes him feel more alive. Bend the arms gently at the elbows. Make sure the World Cup catches the light.
